PRIDE SPLIT AT UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Regis College men's and women's swimming & diving team opened up the 2015-16 campaign with a trip up to Biddeford, Maine to take on the University of New England on Saturday afternoon. Both teams split their head to head competition with the Pride men earning the 139-45 victory over the Nor'Easters while the women dropped a 154-97 decision.

On the men's side, junior swimmer Kiet Luong (Malden, Mass.) broke the pool record in the 100 yard back finishing the race with a time of 55.33. Luong was also part of the 200 yard medley relay team of Bryan Johnson (Sudbury, Mass.), Lawrence Reynolds (Hyde Park, Mass.) and Rob Ekberg (Northbridge, Mass.) that finished first in the event with a time of 1:23.56. He also defeated Pride teammates Joshua Unas (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and Nick Rainville (Reading, Mass.) in the 100 yard fly with a time of 57.41. Unas and Rainville completed the event with times of 57.73 and 58.23 respectively. Rainville also had a strong showing in the 50 yard fly as he finished the race in 25.74 while Rob Ekberg took home first place in the 50 yard free with a final time of 25.52.

For the women, Jessica Higgins (Peabody, Mass.) was the standout swimmer for Regis as she won three races on the day. She defeated the same opponent twice once in the 50 yard backstroke (30.49) and the other in the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.92). Higgins also placed first in the 50 yard free with a time of 26.89. Sophomore Ashlyn Deroche (North Reading, Mass.) earned victories in the 200 yard free with a finishing time of 2:12.23 and also the 100 yard free with a time of 59.53. Senior captain Lucia Llorente Ruiz (Newton, Mass.) earned a win in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:18.33.
