PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After almost 150 minutes of scoreless action between Regis College and Johnson and Wales University encompassing the regular season meeting two weeks ago and Saturday's contest, the Wildcats scored twice to defeat the Pride, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Soccer Tournament at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Johnson and Wales (17-3-1) controlled possession for most of the first half, taking nine shots while not allowing Regis to take any shots. Three of those shots were on target, but Regis keeper Cassidy Van Cott (Santa Monica, Calif.) was able to stop all three attempts to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
Regis created its best scoring opportunity seven minutes in the second half when Sienna Santiago (Brewster, N.Y.) found herself racing down the field toward the JWU goal with the ball. However, her shot went straight into the arms of Wildcat goalie Carly McCrumb.
Less than five minutes later, the Wildcats broke through after earning a corner kick opportunity as Emily DeRoehn eventually found the ball and blasted a shot into the net for her sixth tally of the season. JWU added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Angelina Oliveira intercepted a clearing attempt and sent a blistering shot into the netting.
Van Cott tied her career high with 10 saves during the match, the second time she has earned 10 saves against the Wildcats and third time overall. McCrumb needed to make just the one save to finish with a clean sheet for the third time this season.
Regis sees the 2024 season end with a 10-8-4 overall record, its fourth straight winning season and the seventh time since 2012 that the Pride have won 10 or more matches in a single season.
