WESTON, Mass. – In a match with few scoring chances, Rivier University broke through in the second half and held on to defeat Regis College, 1-0, Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer match at Regis Stadium.
Despite a scoreless first half, Regis led 7-2 in shots in the first half as well as 2-0 in corner kicks. In the 20th minute of action, Maeve Glavin (Norwood, Mass.) took a shot to the top left quadrant of the net, followed by a shot from Sienna Santiago (Brewster, N.Y. ) however, the Pride was unable to pass Raiders goalie Bri Nugent. The Pride gained offensive momentum towards the end of the first half finishing with a shot just gone wide, concluding the first half, 0-0.
Regis accumulated a chance to score with a corner kick, however Colleen Curran (Woburn, Mass.) shot was stopped by the Raiders goalie at the start of the second half. The Raiders were credited with a goal when Darcy Wright made her way into the box weaving around defenders, giving her room to find the back of the net and score in the 71st minute of action. Despite their efforts, the Pride was unable to score following the Raiders goal, resulting in a 1-0 final.
Regis held on in the second half with one save in net from Cassidy Van Cott (Santa Monica, Calif.) in the first half, followed by three in the second half. Nugent played in net for all 90 minutes for the Raiders facing eight shots making eight saves.
Payton Bridge (Norton, Mass.) and Santiago led the Pride with four shots apiece in tonights match.
Regis (7-6-3, 5-3-3 GNAC) hosts Johnson and Wales University on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 1:00 p.m. Rivier University (8-4-4, 8-1-2 GNAC) is scheduled to host Saint Joseph's College on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 3:00 p.m.
