Women’s Soccer Falls to Nationally Ranked Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. – Regis College lost to Tufts University, ranked 25th in the most recent United Soccer Coaches National Poll, 5-0, Monday night in a non-conference women's collegiate soccer match at Bello Field.

Tufts (7-2-1) struck first two-and-a-half minutes into the match as Caroline Kelly decided to take a shot on a free kick opportunity, but the blast was stopped by Regis keeper Cassidy Van Cott (Santa Monica, Calif.). However, Nicola Sommers pounced on the rebound and sent it into the net for the Jumbos' first goal of the contest.

The Jumbos maintained much of the possession in the first half, but Van Cott kept the Pride within one goal by making five saves. Tufts finally broke through in the final three minutes of the period with two goals in the span of 1:17, with Aoife O'Reilly picking up a goal before Sarah Hauck scored off an assist from Maren Jones.

Sommers scored again 13 minutes into the second half, with Cate Holzbeierlein picking up the assist. Jones added a goal with just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest as the Jumbos finished with 14 shots on goal and 11 corner kicks.

Van Cott finished with six saves before Daniela Mazo (Bridgeport, Conn.) took over in the second half and was credited with three saves. Alexis Sherry (Salem, Mass.) accounted for the Pride's only shot on goal, but her long blast was caught by Natalie Rinker, who played the second half after Greta Steege started the match in net for the Jumbos but did not see a shot in the first half.

Regis (5-5-3) begins a four-match homestand with its final regular season non-conference contest of the year, hosting Wentworth Wednesday, Oct. 9, starting at 7 p.m. It is Most Valuable Professors (MVPs) Night as the Pride players will recognize their favorite members of the Regis faculty before the match.
