Women’s Soccer Earns First-Ever Win Over Monks, 3-1

STANDISH, Maine – For the first time in eight meetings, Regis College defeated Saint Joseph's College, 3-1, Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer match at the SJC Athletics Complex.

It took over a half-hour before the action picked up as Regis drew a free kick just outside the 18-yard box in the 33rd minute. Payton Bridge (Norton, Mass.) curved her kick just inside the right post into the net, freezing the Monk goalie and giving the Pride a 1-0 advantage.

Five-and-a-half minutes later, Avary Hall (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) raced down the right side of the field with the ball before sending a crossing pass into the box. Sienna Santiago (Brewster, N.Y.) met the ball and found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

In the 40th minute, Hall created two chances to score and further increase the Pride lead, but Ashlyn Guerette turned both shots away to keep the score at 2-0 in Regis' favor heading into halftime. The Monks had a couple opportunities early in the second half to cut into the Pride lead, but Regis goalie Cassidy Van Cott (Santa Monica, Calif.) made two saves within the first seven minutes after halftime.

Regis added another tally in the 74th minute as Colleen Curran (Woburn, Mass.) was able to collect the rebound off a blocked shot and find the back of the net for her first goal of the year. Saint Joseph's College broke up the shutout in the 89th minute on a goal by Bridget Davis, but the Pride were able to complete the victory.

Van Cott finished with three saves as she picked up the victory, while Guerette was credited with four saves in her attempt to keep the Monks in the match. Regis outshot Saint Joseph's College, 13-6 and created six corner kick chances while preventing the Monks from earning any corner kick opportunities.

Regis College (3-4-2, 2-2-2 GNAC) hosts Dean College as part of Regis Fest Saturday, Sept. 28, starting at 1:30 p.m.
