Women’s Soccer Sees Rainy Match End in 1-1 Tie

WESTON, Mass. - In a match suspended for nine days due to lightning and then played in a steady rain, Regis College overcame a slow restart and eventually pulled even with Albertus Magnus College, resulting in a 1-1 tie between the Pride and the Falcons Monday afternoon in the completion of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer match.

The first 38:41 was played Saturday, Sept. 9, with Regis earning two solid scoring chances on shots by Colleen Curran (Woburn, Mass.) and Meadow Comeiro (Woburn, Mass.) in the span of one minute that were both stopped by Falcon goalie Amy Stevens. Comeiro took another shot shortly after the resumption of play Monday, with Stevens once again corralling the ball.

In the 43rd minute, Ejalam Bravo sent a ball through the box to the right side of the field, where Tyler Stocking completed her run and blasted a shot into the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. After Stevens made another save on a shot by Erin Flaherty (Ashland, Mass.) in the final seconds of the first half, Albertus Magnus took its advantage into halftime.

The Falcons threatened to extend their lead just over one minute into the second half, but a shot by Victoria Jainchill was turned away by Regis keeper Linda Johnson (Shapleigh, Maine), who had replaced starting goalie Cristina Nazario (Isla Verde, Puerto Rico) when play resumed. Johnson finished with two saves, as she also stopped a shot by Sophia Vescera in the 68th minute.

Regis increased its offensive pressure in the second half, finally converting when Maeve Glavin (Norwood, Mass.) sent a ball through the box towards net, and Janet Amasa-Titus (Georgetown, Mass.) redirected it from the right post into the net for her first career collegiate tally. Stevens would keep the match tied as she finished with eight saves.

The Pride outshot the Falcons, 18-5, led by Glavin and Comeiro with four shots apiece. Regis also drew 10 corner kicks during the match while Albertus Magnus earned two corner kick opportunities, both in the first half.

Regis College (1-3-2, 0-2-2 GNAC) hosts New England College Wednesday, Sept. 20, starting at 4:30 p.m., with a fundraising drive taking place for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Albertus Magnus (1-3-2, 0-3-1 GNAC) travels to face Mitchell College Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m.
