Regis Women’s Soccer Succumbs to Late Goal

WESTON, Mass. - In a match that did not feature many true scoring chances, Lasell University broke through late in regulation and held on to defeat Regis College, 1-0, Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer contest at rainy Regis Stadium.

Of the 15 shots taken by the two teams, only five of them were on goal, with Lasell holding the 11-4 shot advantage. The Lasers were credited with two shots on goal in the first half, but shot attempts by Sarah Lynch and Serena Speight were corralled by Pride goalie Cassidy Van Cott (Santa Monica, Calif.).

Regis created two scoring opportunities in the final five minutes of the first half, but attempts by Tia Zanardi (Haverhill, Mass.) and Meadow Comeiro (Woburn, Mass.) sailed just wide. With 13 minutes elapsed in the second half, Michelina D'Agostino took a shot off a free kick that Van Cott was able to catch, keeping the match scoreless.

After Lasell keeper Kyli Swann made her only save of the night on a shot by Allison Meade (Stoneham, Mass.), the Lasers brought the ball up the field and eventually passed it to Speight. She started crossing the field from left to right before stopping and launching a shot that sailed over Van Cott's head into the net for the eventual game-winning tally with 6:26 remaining in regulation.

Speight led the Lasers with four total shots while Swann earned her second shutout of the season. Van Cott finished the match with three saves. It was the third consecutive match between the two teams that ended with a 1-0 score in Lasell's favor.
