Women’s Soccer Falls in Regular Season Finale

WESTON, Mass. – Battling raw, windy conditions as well as its opponent, Regis College stayed with Lasell University throughout the contest, but the Lasers were able to defeat the Pride, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer match at Regis Stadium.

Regis gained early possession and created a couple scoring opportunities in the 10th minute, starting with a shot by Miya Nishibun (Honolulu, Hawaii) that was blocked out of bounds to bring about a corner kick. Nishibun sent the corner kick into the box, but Sam Perkins's (Whitman, Mass.) shot sailed wide.

Lasell started attacking the Pride defense, as shots by Alex Lorenzo and Priscilla Martinelli needed to be turned away by Regis goalie Angie Caldwell (Goffstown, N.H.), making her first start of the season. The Lasers maintained possession in the 21st minute, with Alyssa DeOliveira gathering the ball within the box, dribbling around the Pride backline, and sending a shot past Caldwell into the net for her GNAC-leading 16th goal of the season.

The Lasers had an excellent chance to extend their lead in the 28th minute, but a shot by Maria Henriquez was cleared off the goal line by a Regis defender. Lasell continued its pressure, taking three shots in the final five minutes, but two of them were off-target and the third by DeOliveira was stopped by Caldwell for her sixth save of the half, keeping the Pride within one at halftime.

Similar to the first half, Regis controlled the early possession of the second half, once again drawing a corner kick in the 53rd minute. Aria Ulmer (Henniker, N.H.) met Nishibun's entry pass with a header that went wide right, and Nishibun followed one minute later with a shot that was saved by Laser keeper Angela Sanzari.

The Lasers held the ball for most of the remaining time, but the Pride did advance the play on two occasions, with shots by Hailey Lovell (Wakefield, Mass.) and Perkins just off-target. For the match, Lasell finished with 11 shots on goal, led by DeOliveira with four shots on goal.

Ori Attridge (Westwood, Mass.) took over in goal for the Pride in the second half and made three saves, while Sanzari earned the clean sheet for the Lasers.

Regis (8-5-2, 7-4-2 GNAC) will be the seventh seed in the upcoming GNAC Women's Soccer Tournament and will travel to face second seed Lasell (11-4, 11-2 GNAC) this weekend in the quarterfinals. With two matches postponed until Thursday due to weather, the full bracket for the tournament will be announced after those contests are completed.
