Regis Women’s Soccer Settles for 1-1 Tie

NASHUA, N.H. – Despite controlling the vast majority of the play, Regis College could manage only a 1-1 draw with Rivier University Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer match at Raiders Field.

The Pride immediately went on the offensive, forcing Raider keeper Emily Mikelson to make three saves within the first 11 minutes of the match. In the 14th minute, Payton Bridge (Norton, Mass.) found Sara Costa (Ludlow, Mass.) for a scoring opportunity, and Costa was able to convert for her second goal of the season.

The iron was unkind to Regis later in the first half, as a shot by Allison Meade (Stoneham, Mass.) in the 31st minute hit the crossbar and one by Hailey Lovell (Wakefield, Mass.) three-and-a-half minutes later pinged off the left post.

Rivier (2-12-3, 0-9-3 GNAC) made its lone shot of the first half count, as Kaylee Magoon converted on her scoring chance with 34 seconds remaining before halftime to tie the match at 1-1.

The Raiders changed goalies at halftime, and Maya Puma was up to the task of preventing the go-ahead tally, making seven saves in the second half. The Pride also had opportunities in the last two minutes of regulation, but two shots by Lovell in the span of almost a minute were off-target.

Off a Regis corner kick in the first overtime, Miya Nishibun (Honolulu, Hawaii) had two chances to add to her single-season school record for goals, but one shot was saved by Puma and the other sailed high. Puma made the final one of her nine saves during the second overtime session on a shot by Bridge, preserving the tie.

Lovell led the Pride with seven total shots, followed by Meade, Bridge, and Sam Perkins (Whitman, Mass.) with five shots apiece. Cristina Nazario (Isla Verde, Puerto Rico) received her first career start in net for the Pride and played the first half, with Linda Johnson (Sanford, Maine) appearing in a collegiate match for the first time beginning at the start of the second half and continuing through both overtime periods.

Regis College (8-4-2, 7-3-2 GNAC) concludes the regular season Wednesday, Oct. 27, with a short trip to face Lasell University starting at 3 p.m.
