Pride Women’s Soccer Picks Up GNAC Point with 2-2 Draw

CHICOPEE, Mass. – In an evenly-played contest, Regis College scored the game-tying goal late in the second half as its match against Elms College eventually ended after double overtime in a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer match at Leary Field.

Elms (7-6-2, 6-4-1 GNAC) pressured the Regis defense through the early part of the match, taking four shots on goal in the first 25 minutes that were all turned away by Pride keeper Ori Attridge (Westwood, Mass.). The Pride started to control more of the possession, with shots by Hailey Lovell (Wakefield, Mass.) and Allison Meade (Stoneham, Mass.) turned away by Elms goalie Hannah DelGuidice.

In the 35th minute, the Pride put the first tally on the scoreboard as Sara Costa (Ludlow, Mass.) scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Five minutes later, the Blazers tied the contest when Kayla Pasquel scored off an assist by Hannah Duggan.

Regis created several scoring opportunities early in the second half with three shots that challenged DelGuidice in the first 15 minutes after halftime. Elms gained possession and drew a corner kick, followed by a goal by Abby Goodnow in the 64th minute to give the Blazers a 2-1 advantage.

The Pride continually pressed the play up the field, and the added intensity finally paid off as, in the 80th minute, Lovell collected the ball in the box and sent a shot into the net for her third goal of the season to tie the match heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.

The Blazers had a couple of chances to end the game in regulation with a go-ahead goal, but Angie Caldwell (Goffstown, N.H.), taking over in net to start the second half, made three saves in the final eight minutes of regulation to keep the contest a tie and force overtime. Caldwell would make three more saves in the first overtime period, and each team would conclude the match with one point in the league standings.

The Blazers finished with 15 shots on goal, but Attridge earned six saves and Caldwell finished with seven saves for the Pride. DelGuidice collected eight saves as Regis ended up with 19 total shots, led by Meade with six shots and Lovell with five shots, including four shots on goal.

Regis College (7-4-1, 6-3-1 GNAC) plays its final home match of the regular season Wednesday, Oct. 20, against University of Saint Joseph starting at 7 p.m.
