Women’s Soccer Unable to Break Through in GNAC Loss

WESTON, Mass. – Despite a significant shot advantage, Regis College could not break through offensively against Albertus Magnus, as the Falcons scored late in regulation to defeat the Pride, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer match at Regis Stadium.

The Pride controlled possession right from the start, challenging Falcon goalie Michelle Mecca early and often, including shots on goal by Kerri Urquhart (Burlington, Mass.), Sam Perkins (Whitman, Mass.), and Maria Toumbouras (Walpole, Mass.) in the span of two minutes midway through the first half. Regis maintained the offensive pressure, but could not finish any scoring chances, leaving the match scoreless at halftime.

Albertus Magnus earned a scoring chance five minutes into the second half, but Regis keeper Ori Attridge (Westwood, Mass.) was able to turn away a shot by Keegan Riccio. The Pride quickly responded with shots from Miya Nishibun (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Hailey Lovell (Wakefield, Mass.), but those were stopped by Mecca.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Lovell drew a foul in the box to create a penalty kick opportunity. However, Lovell's attempt was deflected away by Mecca, and a follow-up shot by Aria Ulmer (Henniker, N.H.) also could not get past the Falcon keeper.

The Falcons put together a counter-attack, as Katherine Raposo dribbled the ball up the field before passing it to Amanda McGeehan on the right wing. McGeehan sent a shot into the upper left corner of the net to give Albertus Magnus a 1-0 advantage, and the visitors were able to withstand a final charge by the Pride to pick up the victory.

Mecca finished the match with 13 saves, including eight saves in the second half, as Regis outshot Albertus Magnus, 27-5. Perkins and Lovell led the Pride with six shots apiece, while Attridge was credited with two saves during the afternoon.

Regis College (2-2, 1-1 GNAC) travels to Curry College for a rescheduled contest Monday, Sept. 20, beginning at 7 p.m. before resuming conference play at Colby-Sawyer Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 3:30 p.m. Albertus Magnus (3-2, 2-1 GNAC) hosts CCNY Wednesday at 6 p.m. before heading north to face Saint Joseph's College next Saturday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m.
