Women’s Soccer Rallies for 3-2 Road Victory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Regis College scored twice in the span of 47 seconds late in the second half to defeat Rhode Island College, 3-2, Wednesday night in a non-conference women's collegiate soccer match at Alumni Field.

Down 2-1, Regis would draw a corner kick as the match entered the 81st minute thanks to the hustle of Maria Toumbouras (Walpole, Mass.). Miya Nishibun (Honolulu, Hawaii) sent the corner kick into the box, where Alexa Katsoulis (Oxford, Mass.) connected on a header to tie the contest at 2-2.

Just 47 seconds after the game-tying goal, the Pride drew a foul within the box to create a penalty kick opportunity. Aria Ulmer (Henniker, N.H.) was successful on her attempt to put Regis ahead for good with just 9:01 remaining in regulation. Rhode Island College tried to pull the match back into a tie, but shots by Marissa Ruzzano and Jayde Fernandes were off-target.

The Pride controlled the early action, earning four shots on goal within the first 15 minutes of the contest that were all turned aside by Rhode Island College goalie Reagan Kerecz. The Anchorwomen broke through in the 21st minute, as Fernandes set up Serena Forte at the top-right of the box for the first goal of the night to put the home team on top, 1-0.

Less than a minute later, Payton Bridge (Norton, Mass.) stole a clearing attempt by the Anchorwomen and sent a blast into the upper-right corner of the net for her first career collegiate goal, tying the match at 1-1. However, Rhode Island College jumped right back in the lead less than seven minutes later, as Forte sent Fernandes in on a breakaway and Fernandes slipped the ball inside the left post for the 2-1 advantage.

Angie Caldwell (Goffstown, N.H.) took over in net for the Pride to start the second half and was quickly challenged, making two saves in the first five minutes after halftime to keep Regis within one. In total, Caldwell made three saves as she picked up the victory, while Kerecz finished with 10 saves as the Pride outshot the Anchorwomen, 19-12.

Rhode Island College (0-6) was led in total shots by Fernandes with four and Ruzzano with three. For Regis, Hailey Lovell (Wakefield, Mass.) led the way with four total shots, followed by Julia Walsh (Waltham, Mass.) with three shots.

Regis College (2-1) returns to conference play when it hosts Albertus Magnus Saturday, Sept. 18, starting at 12 p.m. at Regis Stadium.
