NIGHTHAWKS SLIP PAST PRIDE IN OT

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Regis College suffered a 3-2 setback to Newbury College in overtime on Tuesday night in New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer action. The Pride fall to 5-10-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the NECC, while the Nighthawks improve to 4-10-1 and 2-5-1 in league games.

Regis set the tone early, controlling the majority of the first half. In the 30th minute, senior midfielder Sam Salamone (Milford, Mass.) put the Pride on the scoreboard finding the back of the net following a corner kick from fellow senior, Kristen Abreu (Woburn, Mass.) to give the Pride the 1-0 lead.

Trailing 1-0, the Nighthawks remained resilient. Junior defenders Carly Gibbard (Commack, N.Y.) and Elizabeth Kia (Kea'au, Hawaii) came up strong on the Nighthawk defensive line, buying time for the Nighthawk offense to come through. With four minutes remaining in the half the Nighthawks were in prime position to score.

Coming up the right-side, senior forward Corrinn Niski (Oxford, Conn.) connected with first year forward Jenni McDonald (Magnolia, Texas). McDonald's shot rifled off the top cross bar but right to the wide-open, Walsh, who was standing just four-yards away from the net to knot up the contest at 1-1 heading into the break.

When the teams returned to the pitch at the start of the second period, the Nighthawk offense wasted very little time. First year midfielder Natasha Simon (Gloversville, N.Y.) knocked the ball past Pride goalkeeper Rachel Gagnon (Ashford, Conn.) to give the Nighthawks the one-goal lead.

The Pride tied it back up midway through the period. Off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Michaela Bouvette (Mattapoisett, Mass.), junior Hannah Bouvette (Mattapoisett, Mass.) buried her six goal of the season. The game stood at a 2-2 stand-still throughout the remainder of regulation.

Three minutes into overtime, Abreu was awarded a penalty kick following a foul. In a show-down between Abreu and Nighthawk senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Fox (Orono, Maine), Fox came up with the huge save, rejecting the attempt by knocking it over the crossbar.

A minute later, sophomore midfielder Ace Morley-Wolbert (Williamstown, N.J.) of the Nighthawks was granted a penalty kick of her own. Walsh took the kick and buried her team-leading ninth goal of the season to send the Nighthawks to victory.

The Crimson and Gold return to action on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale at Elms College scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
