PRIDE FALL TO NON-CONFERENCE FOE BLUE JAYS

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Seniors Sara Barnick (Watertown, Conn.) and Emily Burke (Windsor Locks, Conn.) scored first-half goals to lead the University of Saint Joseph soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference victory over Regis College Wednesday in West Hartford, Conn.

USJ improved to 3-4 overall and Regis is 1-5-1. It was the fourth game between the schools in a series that began with the 2012 ECAC Tournament and USJ has won all four meetings.

Sarah Palko (Southington, Conn.) assisted on both goals. First, she found Barnick open on the left side, a stride inside the box. Barnick blasted a shot that became her second goal of the season to put the Blue Jays up 1-0 just 2:24 into the game. USJ continued to apply pressure, outshooting the Pride 12-0 in the first half. Palko took a corner kick which Burke headed in for her first goal of the season that gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead at 15:22.

USJ outshot Regis 17-2 for the game and earned more corner kicks, 6-1. Melissa Dodge (Watertown, Conn.) earned her 35th career win in goal and 26th shutout. Rachel Gagnon (Ashford, Conn.) made six saves for Regis.

USJ next plays at St. Joseph's of Maine in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game, Sat. Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. Regis hosts Bay Path in a New England Collegiate Conference game as part of Pride Fest, Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
