REGIS AND MOUNT IDA DRAW, 2-2

REGIS AND MOUNT IDA DRAW, 2-2

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College and Mount Ida College dueled to a 2-2 draw on Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action in Weston, Mass. The Pride move to 0-1-1 on the year, while the Mustangs are now 1-1-1.

Joana Rosa (Roxbury, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Pride as she took a long ball over the top from Michaela Bouvette (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and fired a shot top shelf and past the outstretched hands of Mount Ida's Kelsey Parkin (Standish, Maine) to give Regis a 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs answered nearly three minutes later following a foul on the Pride. On the ensuing free kick, Emily Oltmanns (Golden, Conn.) lofted the ball into the Regis box, where the ball bounced once, and right to the foot of Morgan Rzonca (Bristol, Conn.), who blasted the equalizer into the back of the net.

Both teams struggled offensively over the next nearly 30 minutes of play with Parkin and Regis' Rachel Gagnon (Ashford, Conn.) each turning away shots. In the 38th minute of the contest, Rosa forced a turnover at the top of the Mount Ida 18 and lofted the ball on net trying to get it over Parkin's head. The freshman raced back to her line and batted the ball away before it could cross the line, but Rosa was there for the rebound, as she blasted the ball past the keeper for the 2-1 lead.

Out of the half, Mount Ida turned up the pressure, peppering the Regis keeper Gagnon with shots on goal, and the senior was up to the task, stopping all four attempts through the first 33 minutes of the period. Mount Ida finally broke through in the 78th minute of the game as Isabelle Moody (Naugatuck, Conn.) took a through ball from Hannah Brackett (Voorheesville, N.Y.) and beat Gagnon 1-on-1 with a nifty dribble move to fire on an open net and tie the game at 2-2.

The Mustangs had a few more chances to pull ahead, but Gagnon stopped a Moody shot in the final minute of action to send the game into overtime.

In the first extra period, Shannon Cafua (Watertown, Mass.) had a chance to win the game as she one-timed a high-arcing shot on net, but Kelsey Parkin jumped into the air for the save to preserve the 2-2 tie and send the game to a second OT.

Gagnon was forced to make a pair of saves early in the second extra period, and Regis had a corner kick in the 106th minute of play, but neither team mounted much of an attack as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Mount Ida held a 22-13 edge in shots, while Regis attempted all five corner kicks in the contest. Rachel Gagnon made 11 saves on the day, while her counterpart Parkin had five stops.

The Crimson and Gold look for their first win of the season on Thursday afternoon when they travel to #25 Brandeis University for a 4:00 p.m. game. Mount Ida hosts Mitchell College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
