PRIDE SINK MARINERS, 3-0

WESTON, Mass. – Three different players found the back of the net en route to a 3-0 shutout victory for the Regis College women's soccer team over New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) foe Mitchell College. The Pride grab their first win in league play and improve to 4-5-2 overall, 1-1-1 NECC. The Mariners fall to 1-7 on the season, 1-2 NECC with the loss.

The Pride had a wealth of opportunities to open the game. They were awarded six corner kicks within the first 18 minutes of play, but were not able to capitalize. Regis was finally able to get on the scoreboard in the 21st minute of play after a great buildup.

Junior Shannon Simonelli (Providence, R.I.) dribbled down the middle of the field and dished a through-ball to forward Adena Joseph (Stoughton, Mass.). Joseph moved down the right wing, faked out a Mariner player with a cut back move, and sent the ball into the box. The ball hit off a Mitchell defender, then deflected off goalkeeper Kaylee Woodford (Niantic, Conn.), then rolled over to freshman Joana Rosa (Roxbury, Mass.). Rosa tapped the ball into a wide open net for her first career goal and the 1-0 lead.

Mitchell was only able to get off two shots in the first half, which would prove to be their only shots of the game. Sophomores Alexander Mahar (Watertown, Conn.) and Katie McBride (Paris, France) each tallied a shot for the Mariners, but neither of their attempts were on target.

Coming out of the break, Regis did not waste any time in building their lead. Less than a minute into the half, Jasmin Vivar (Attleboro, Mass.) connected with Sam Salamone (Milford, Mass.) on a corner kick. Salamone headed Vivar's ball into the back of the net to put the Pride up 2-0.

Joseph would help put the game away in the 77th minute of play. After Simonelli was taken down in the box by a Mitchell defender, Regis was awarded a penalty shot. Joseph calmly stepped up to take the shot and struck it high-middle to make the game 3-0.

The Regis backline, led by junior Jackie Rocheville (Salem, Mass.) and senior Nora Bosteels (Canton, Mass.), were solid all game-long and prevented the visitors from taking a single shot in the entire second half.

Woodford finished the game with nine saves to lead Mitchell, who will travel to Elms on Monday for a 7 p.m. league game. Regis will also be on the road on Monday, as the Pride take on NECC opponent Daniel Webster at 4 p.m.
