PRIDE PLAY TO 1-1 STALEMATE WITH BUCCS

WESTON, Mass. – Despite outshooting visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy by a 41-3 margin, the Regis College women's soccer team was unable to break through for a second goal, and tied the Buccaneers, 1-1 on Tuesday evening at Regis Stadium. Both squads remain undefeated on the young season, with Mass. Maritime sitting at 1-0-1 and the Pride moving to 2-0-1 with the result.

After a quiet start to the game, Regis opened up the scoring in the 17th minute of play off a goal from Adena Joseph (Stoughton, Mass.). Kristen Abreu (Woburn, Mass.) sent a high-sailing ball into the box from the right side of the field, which midfielder Tess McLean (West Roxbury, Mass.) ran onto. The midfielder made a nifty touch to an open Joseph, who slipped the ball underneath Buccaneer goalkeeper Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) just a few yards from the goal-line for the 1-0 lead.

The Pride carried the play for the next few minutes until a foul from a Regis player set Mass. Maritime up with a free kick opportunity from about 30 yards out. Senior forward Lauren Salem (Westfield, Mass.) blasted a shot into the top left corner in the 34th minute to knot the game at one apiece.

The second half saw the Crimson & Gold pepper Levesque with plenty of shots, but the host squad was unable to capitalize. McLean took a crack of a shot in the 53rd minute that struck the crossbar. With just under 20 minutes to play, Abreu beat several MMA defenders and had a one-on-one opportunity with Levesque, but her shot sailed just wide.

The Pride looked like they would get the golden goal in the first overtime period with less than three minutes remaining. Junior Jasmin Vivar (Attleboro, Mass.) played a nice through-ball to a streaking Joseph, who then slotted the ball back to the penalty kick marker where McLean found herself wide open. Fortunately for the visitors, Levesque came up with one of her 19 saves on the night when she denied McLean's shot to preserve the tie.

The Buccaneers were paced by Salem and Emily Behen (Danvers, Mass.), who combined for their team's three shots in the game. Joseph, Abreu, and Vivar combined for 22 shots to lead the Pride.

Mass. Maritime will next travel to Anna Maria on Thursday for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game, while Regis will travel just down the road to take on Wellesley College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
