PRIDE STAY UNDEFEATED IN NECC WITH 4-1 WIN OVER NEWBURY

WESTON, Mass. – Sophomore Kristen Abreu (Woburn, Mass.) tallied two goals for Regis en route to a 4-1 victory over the Nighthawks of Newbury College in New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer play. The win keeps the Pride unbeaten in conference, as the team's record improves to 6-1-2 (3-0-1 NECC). Newbury falls to 1-7 (0-4 NECC) with the loss.

Regis wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Jasmin Vivar (Attleboro, Mass.) scored in just the second minute of the game. After a loose ball bounced off a Newbury defender, the sophomore midfielder was able to one-time a shot at the top of the box that sailed over Newbury goalkeeper Nikki Garafalo (Winsted, Conn.) for the early 1-0 lead.

Despite several buildups, the Crimson and Gold were unable to add onto the lead until the 41:27 minute mark. Adena Joseph (Stoughton, Mass.) beat a Newbury defender and dribbled into the box before releasing a shot that beat Garafalo on the lower left side of the net.

The Nighthawks were able to respond less than two minutes later following a foul on Regis that set Newbury up for a free kick attempt from about 30 yards out from the goal. Sophomore midfielder Jamie Chernesky (Glenville, N.Y.) took a shot that skipped on the slick turf past Regis goalie Rachel Gagnon (Ashford, Conn.) to cut the lead in half.

The second half was all Regis, as the Pride outshot the Nighthawks by an 18-0 margin. Abreu scored her first goal of the game in the 59th minute of play. Michelle Sirois (Easton, Mass.) sent a perfect ball from the outside that caused Garafalo to come out of the net, which left Abreu wide open to blast the ball into the back of the net. Abreu finished the scoring for the day fifteen minutes later with a tap in goal following passes from Sirois and Joseph, who were each credited with assists.

The Regis defense, led by Kara Donovan (Woburn, Mass.) and Jackie Rocheville (Salem, Mass.), continued its stingy play and limited the Nighthawks to just two shots all game, with one each coming from Ashleigh Guy and Chernesky. Garafalo finished the game with eight saves, while Gagnon did not record a save.

Regis will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, as the team welcomes Daniel Webster for a 2:30 p.m. conference game, while Newbury will travel to Lesley on Sunday for a 12:00 p.m. conference matchup.
