SIROIS TALLY KEEPS PRIDE UNDEFEATED IN CONFERENCE

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Regis women's soccer team upended the Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field by a score of 1-0, handing the Mariners their first loss in conference play. The victory keeps the Pride undefeated in the New England Collegiate Conference, as the team improves to 5-1-2 (2-0-1 NECC). The loss drops Mitchell to 2-5-0 (2-1-0 NECC).

Michelle Sirois (Easton, Mass.) scored the match's lone goal in the second half to propel Regis to victory. The Pride held a 15-5 edge in shots and put ten on goal to pressure the Mitchell defense.

After a scoreless first half in which Regis outshot Mitchell 11-1, the Mariners pushed forward more in the second stanza and produced scoring chances. Sophomore Madeline Crow (Rockville, Md.) put two shots on goal in the half for Mitchell, but goalkeeper Rachel Gagnon (Ashford, Conn./E.O. Smith) made saves each time.

It was an individual effort by Sirois in the 72nd minute that was the difference. She settled a long pass up the right sideline and quickly turned past her defender. After dribbling 20 yards along the sideline, she turned the corner against her defender and lofted a shot across the box and over the keeper that found the back corner of the goal. It was her team-leading fifth tally of the season and came with just 18:15 remaining in the contest.

The Pride possessed well down the stretch and kept the Mariners from a chance to equalize. Gagnon finished with three saves to record her sixth shutout of the year, while Mitchell junior Kaylee Woodford (Niantic, Conn.) made nine saves.

Regis returns to action at home against Newbury College on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Mitchell will next play at Southern Vermont College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
