SIROIS, MITROPOULOS GOALS NOT ENOUGH TO BEAT NIGHTHAWKS

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Newbury College avenged an earlier 1-0 defeat at the hands of Regis College with a 5-2 victory over the Pride on Wednesday night in NECC women's soccer action. Regis drops to .500 at 6-6 overall and is 2-4 in the NECC while the Nighthawks are 4-4-1 and 2-1-1 in league play. Michelle Sirois (Easton, Mass.) and Michelle Mitropoulos (Arlington, Mass.) each added goals in the setback.

First year midfielder Kelsey Landry (Milford, N.H.) gave Newbury the early lead finding the back of the net 11 minutes into the contest on a pass from fellow midfielder Jamie Tannura (Elmsford, N.Y.) and defender Kristina Almeida (Coventry, R.I.). The lead did not hold for long as Sirois knotted up the contest at one, which is where it stayed for the rest of the first half.

Less than 10 minutes into the second period, Landry added to her first half goal, finding Ashleigh Guy (North Providence, R.I.) open for the game-winner the 54th minute of the contest. Nine minutes later Tannura connected with Guy for the Rhode Island native's second goal of the game and sixth of the season to push the Nighthawk lead to 3-1.

The Pride was resilient, mounting a late game comeback. Freshman Adena Joseph (Stoughton, Mass.) found senior Michelle Mitropoulos for Regis' second goal to cut the deficit in half but the stoic Nighthawk defense, anchored by keeper senior Rachel Wyszynski (Wilbraham, Mass.), hung tough and held on for their second conference win of the season.

The Crimson and Gold look to snap a four game skid when the Pride hosts Bay Path College in an NECC contest at 12:00 p.m.
