HORNETS SNEAK PAST REGIS WITH 1-0 WIN

WESTON, Mass. – Lyndon State College senior Samantha Bergeron (Milton, Vt.) scored what would turn out to be the only goal of the game in the 34th minute to help the Hornets defeat Regis College, 1-0, in non-conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon in Weston, Mass. Lyndon State improves to 4-0 this season while the Pride suffers its first setback of the year and drops to 2-1.

Lyndon State had several opportunities to score early in the first half. The Hornets' Emily Strese (Gilmanton, N.H.) had a free kick nearly eight minutes into the game that hit the crossbar and sailed out of bounds. Sarah Cornell (Lyndonville, Vt.) nearly gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead when her shot trickled past the outstretched hands of the Regis keeper but was just wide, leaving the game tied at zero. Lyndon State finally got on the board in the 34th minute when Samantha Bergeron took a through ball from midfield off the foot of Strese that Bergeron planted in the top left corner of the net to give the Hornets the early advantage.

Regis had its first chance of the half when a corner kick by Jackie Rocheville (Salem, Mass.) landed at the feet of Kelly Cadigan (Ware, Mass.). The senior turned and fired on net but the ball sailed just high, nearly grazing the crossbar, but left Regis facing a 1-0 deficit headed into the half.

In the second stanza, Lyndon State pursued an insurance goal but the Regis defense was up to the task. In the 50th minute, Cornell took a through ball on a breakaway but Regis' Michaela Yebba (Wakefield, Mass.) stonewalled her attempt and preserved the 1-0 deficit. A similar play developed with only 15 minutes remaining in the game as Lindi Libera (West Burk, Vt.) streaked on a breakaway, but her shot was also turned away when Yebba made a sprawling stop. Unfortunately for the Pride, they could not turn the excellent defense into offense as the Hornets kept the pressure in the Regis zone and held onto the 1-0 victory.

Lyndon State held a 16-11 edge in shots while the Pride doubled up the Hornets in corner kicks, 4-2. Lyndon State's Tia Billado (Bellows Falls, Vt.) picked up the win in net while making three saves. Michaela Yebba suffered her first loss of the season despite making six stops.

The Crimson and Gold return to action on Thursday night as they wrap up their four-game home stand with a non-conference matchup against the Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 5:30 p.m. Lyndon State looks to push its winning streak to five when they travel to Newbury College on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
