FRYE HAS NINE SAVES IN MATCH-UP VERSUS WESTERN NEW ENGLAND

WESTON, Mass.—Western New England College (6-4, 4-1 TCCC) fought to earn a 3-0 women’s soccer match against its conference opponent Regis College (3-7, 0-5 TCCC) Wednesday.  Shannon Pescatello (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) had the Golden Bears first score of the match at 16:16. Her score was assisted by teammate Sara McMurry (Enfield, Conn./Enfield).

Pescatello had a team-high five shots, with three being on goal. Regis’ keeper, Bethany Frye (Adams, Mass./Hoosac Valley), faced 11 shots on goal by the 75th minute. Krista Gangloff (Newington, Conn./Newington) and Kelci Keene (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) scored the teams second and third goals respectively. Maureen Riley (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) and Morgan Vogt (Henniker, N.H./John Stark) contributed on the assists.

Keene scored off a corner kick taken by Gangloff. With her scoring goal, Gangloff took the second highest number of shots on goal with four. Andrea Almeida (Newington, Conn./Newington) also worked herself into the offensive mix with three shots for the Golden Bears.

Western New England possessed the ball for much of the first half allowing Regis College just one shot. The Golden Bears took 16 shots in the first half to finish with 27 total shots. Regis managed just two shots. Samantha Correia (Berlin, Mass./Hudson) posted Regis’ only shot on goal.

The Golden Bears Kayla Prout (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) finished her day in net with just one save in 72 minutes. Frye finished with nine saves for Regis College, before being replaced by Michella Yebba (Wakefield, Mass./Lynnfield) in the 75th minute.

Regis College managed to hold the Golden Bears to half as many goals this season compared to the two teams meeting in 2009. Western New England posted six goals in a shut of the Pride in Springfield, Massachusetts last year.

Both teams return to the pitch October 2 as Western New England will host The Commonwealth Conference opponent the University of New England at 1:30 p.m. Regis College will host Wentworth at 1:00 p.m. as part of its homecoming activities.
