BOSTON – Regis College lost both ends of a doubleheader to Emmanuel College Thursday evening in non-conference collegiate softball action at Roberto Clemente Field.
GAME ONE: EMMANUEL 8, REGIS 3
Emmanuel (21-9) struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Olivia Conti led off with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on an infield single by Kiana Hinson, and scored on a groundout by Maegan Amsler. Regis starter Diana Petrarca (Coventry, R.I.) did pitch out of the jam without more runs scoring thanks to a groundout and a strikeout.
Andria Braga (Rehoboth, Mass.) led off the second inning with an infield single, and Madison Smith (Malden, Mass.) followed with a double to center field. Bri Page (New Boston, N.H.) laced a single to right field that scored Braga, and a misplay by the Saint defense allowed Smith to come home with the go-ahead run for the Pride. However, Regis could not extend its advantage, as Emmanuel starter Tianna Dawe picked up a strikeout and a double play flyout to end the scoring threat.
The Saints took the lead for good in the third inning on back-to-back home runs by Conti and Hinson. Emmanuel scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and three runs in the sixth inning, with Regis picking one more run up in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Bianca Burke (Cambridge, Mass.) before a groundout ended the game.
Dawe earned the victory by pitching a complete game, allowing five hits, three walks, and two earned runs. Petrarca pitched the first three innings for the Pride before Colby Butterfield (Gilford, N.H.) came on in relief and finished the game, picking up four strikeouts in three innings of work.
GAME TWO: EMMANUEL 9, REGIS 0
Emmanuel took quick control of the nightcap with six runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a grand slam home run from Madison Marks. Marks would also drive in a run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly as well as the first of two Saint runs in the fourth inning with a single to right field.
Brenna Whittaker allowed just two hits and three walks in five innings, collecting two strikeouts on her way to the victory. Sofia Vitale (Winthrop, Mass.) started the game for Regis before Jilian Glynn (Londonderry, N.H.) took over and pitched 3 2/3 innings, striking out three Emmanuel batters along the way.
Regis College (10-23) concludes the regular season with a GNAC doubleheader against Elms College at home Saturday, April 30, beginning at 12 p.m. After the twinbill, the Pride seniors will be recognized in the Senior Day presentation.
