Pride Fall to Lasers in Sunday Doubleheader

NEWTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's softball team dropped both games of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Lasell, 6-4 in game one and 2-1 in game two.

Game One: Lasell 6, Regis 4

Ellery Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.) recorded three hits and added an RBI, while Sarah Fawcett (Londonderry, N.H.) and Erin Murphy (Bedford, Mass.) recorded two hits apiece, with Fawcett adding two RBIs.

The Pride struck in the first inning with a Rasmussen double down the left field line that brought in Allie Petillo (West Sayville, N.Y.) from second base. Two batters later, Fawcett singled to center field to bring in Rasmussen.

In the bottom of the second inning with runners on the corners, Lisa Pare put the ball in the gap between the second baseman and shortstop that brought in a run. Lasell continued to score in the third inning, scoring a run off a single by Arianna Genovese.  Hannah Doherty put the ball in play with a groundout but drove in a run to give Lasell their first lead of the game, 3-2.

In the fourth inning, the Pride evened things up when Murphy raced around third to reach home after an error. The Lasers' Brianna Gendreau brought home a run in the bottom half of the inning to put Lasell back on top, 4-3.

The Pride battled back in the top of the fifth inning, scoring off a Fawcett double to center field allowing Brianna Napoleone (Medford, Mass.) to score from first base, evening the game at 4-4. Lasell took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning after Genovese hit a single down the left field line with the bases loaded to bring in two runs.

Game Two: Lasell 2, Regis 1

Despite Alyssa Ward (Webster, Mass.) opening the game with six scoreless innings, the Lasers were able to rally in the seventh to down the Pride.

Ward was the lone pitcher for the Pride, giving up four hits and striking out three. Rasmussen again had three hits, a single, a double, and a triple. Fawcett and Murphy each added a pair of hits. Nikki Papadopoulos (Coventry, Conn.) also recorded a hit in the game.

In the first inning, after Kelsey Grimard (Pelham, N.H.) reached first, Rasmussen would hit a double out to center field giving Grimard time to come across home plate for the Pride.

With Lasell trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Sarah Kline doubled to left center field to put a runner in scoring position for the Lasers. Sarah Walton would follow up by reaching first base on an error, allowing Kline to come around and score.

A sacrifice bunt by Bethany Hector shifted Allie Borowsky, who came in as a pinch runner for Walton, to second base. After a Pare single put runners on the corners, Alexis Truesdale put the ball in play to bring in the game-winning run.

Lasell (5-21, 2-6 GNAC) will play Norwich in another GNAC contest on Thursday, Apr. 18.

Regis (4-20, 1-7 GNAC) will play a home doubleheader against Gordon on Tuesday, Apr. 16, beginning at 3 p.m. The Pride will then play a GNAC doubleheader on Thursday, Apr. 18, when the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales come to the Regis Softball Field.
