Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College softball team took one of their two games Saturday afternoon, beating Elms 5-1 after dropping the first game, 9-4, earlier in the day.

After being kept off the scoreboard through four innings, the Pride bats erupted in the fifth, bringing home three to help secure the victory in game two of their doubleheader.

Nikki Papadopoulos (Coventry, Conn.) brought in two runs for the Pride while Morgan LeBaron (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Ellery Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.) each recorded a pair of hits. In her first start of the season, Madi McLellan (Fremont, N.H.) struck out three while recording a complete game.

In the fifth inning, Brianna Napoleone (Medford, Mass.) singled through the left side by the shortstop. She advanced to second base after a sacrifice bunt was put down by Sarah Fawcett (Londonderry, N.H.).

LeBaron then doubled to left center field setting up runners on second and third for Papadopoulos, who brought in two runs to give the Pride the lead. Allie Petillo (West Sayville, N.Y.) would then single down the right field line, bringing in the third run of the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, Catharine Wrang would score on a passed ball. The Pride would retire the next batter with a pop out to end the inning. 

Regis would score a run in the top of the sixth when Fawcett grounded out to third, allowing the runner on third to come home. The fifth Pride run would come off a Rasmussen single to left field bringing in the runner from second.

Elms 9, Regis 4

The first game of the day saw Elms strike first in the third inning when they would bring in six runs, beginning with a bases loaded triple by Madison Messier.  The next at bat would see Lisa Lusardi single down the left field line bringing Messier home from third.

Down 6-0 going into the fourth, Fawcett would help Regis battle back with a single that advanced Rasmussen to third, who then scored after an error by the right fielder. 

The fifth inning saw the Pride bring in another run with Kelsey Grimard (Pelham, N.H.) sent the ball down the left field line, bringing in Emma Kelly (Lynnfield, Mass.).  In the sixth inning, LeBaron doubled, bringing in two more runs for the Pride to shrink the Elms lead down to two.

Elms responded in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs of their own to close out the game.

Elms (1-9, 0-0 NECC) will wait until Thursday, Apr. 4 to play St. Joseph (Conn.) in a doubleheader. Their following two contests will take place on Saturday, Apr. 6 when they go to play Southern Vermont. 

Regis (2-12, 0-0 GNAC) will next play on Tuesday Apr. 2 against Dean in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at the Regis Softball Field before taking on Simmons the following Saturday, Apr. 6, to open up conference play.
