INAUGURAL SEASON OF FIELDS BRINGS INSPIRATION FOR FUTURE

Weston, Mass.—It was cold that Tuesday afternoon, rainy even. But neither would stop the first-year men’s lacrosse program from taking the field against Daniel Webster. The Pride battled from the opening whistle, scoring the first goal, and giving the Eagles a run for all its worth.

There was something special about that day. It was the last game to be played this season on the new $8.5 million fields that were completed during the summer of 2009.

New developments bring new expectations, and the fields did just that. Following a season in which both lacrosse programs competed at the club level, both teams took to its home turf looking for wins in 2010.

Building a Foundation for the Future…

Women’s lacrosse was led by sophomore Teresa Crevier (Milford, Mass.) in practically every category. Crevier tossed in 35 goals for Regis, the hands down leader. Teammate Evonne Orozco (Waltham, Mass.) chipped-in with 10 goals.

Crevier and Orozco took 88 and 19 shots on goal respectively. The pair will play an integral part in Regis’ success going into the 2011 season.

Comparatively, the men’s program consisted of mostly freshman, and standout Bradford Hastings (Mansfield, Mass.) had 21 goals. The Pride recorded its first win in program history April 29 defeating Rivier College 14-0.

In that game Time Wells (Weston, Mass.) tallied six goals along with others scoring two goals apiece.

Freshman teammate Stephen Bottex (Norwood, Mass.) has taking control of the groundballs category, collecting a team-high 67 this season, and one game remaining. Andrew Goldberg (Solebury, Pa.) follows with 48, while two-sport athlete Wade Thongsythavong (Salem, Mass.) rounds out the top three with 28.

Hastings has been a contributor off the field as well, writing monthly blogs for www.Laxpower.com.

Hits, hits, hits…

Under new direction, softball added wins to its 2009 record. Head coach Lisa LeVierge is fiery and passionate about the sports she coaches. LeVierge is also Regis’ field hockey coach.

Regis battled tough in and out of conference play this year. Junior Hope Benjamin (Rochester, Mass.) swung a big bat, finishing the season with six homeruns, and the team’s second best batting average (.303). Benjamin was also recognized to the All-TCCC Honorable Mention team.

In 120 at bats Shannon Hurley (Billerica, Mass.) led the team with a .383 batting average, and a team leading 47 hits. The 2009 TCCC Rookie of the Year, Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, Calif.) finished with a .298 batting average, second in doubles (7), and hands down leader in triples with five.

It Only Takes One…

Josh Fidalgo (Boston, Mass.) made his mark in the men’s tennis record books, giving Regis its first win of its inaugural season. Fidalgo, also a soccer player, defeated his opponent 6-4, 6-4.

With mostly freshman taking the court, the team showed improvement as the season progressed. Adding experience and athleticism will prove to the conference that Regis men’s tennis can hold its own.

In Sweeping Fashion...

This winter-spring season hybrid was another new sport offered to Regis. Men’s volleyball took the floor with the expectation to just make a showing. Well it did more than that; it swept Albertus Magnus in its two meetings in 2010.

Andrew Carroll (Natick, Mass.) led Regis with 139 kills on the season, an average of 1.93 a game. He was also second on the team in blocks with 16.

SiPan Leong led with 25 blocks. Regis will look to add depth and experience to its program next season. Height is another area that the Pride will address as the men’s volleyball program continues to recruit for its future success.
