Regis Coins 3-0 Victory Against Emerson College

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College swept Emerson College, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-19), Thursday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's volleyball match at Higgins Court.

John Nangle (Lowell, Mass.) and Andrew Matzouranis (North Andover, Mass.) led the Pride with six kills and one solo block each. Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) collected 15 digs, while Joseph Perez (Miami, Fla.) earned eight digs and three service aces.

Regis took an early 7-2 lead in the first set, to go on a 4-0 scoring run with Nangle earning a kill, followed by attack errors by Theo Hackett and Bayden Slavick to further extend the Pride lead. The Pride coined another scoring run of 5-0 with consecutive kills by Matzouranis. The Pride finished the first set 25-17 after a service error on the Lions.

Both teams went point for point in the second set with seven tie scores and five lead changes. Emerson started the second set with a 5-0 scoring run with kills by Slavik and Liam Higgins followed by attack errors from the Pride.

Regis followed with a 4-0 scoring run, to break the tie at nine points with a kill from Perez to earn the lead. Regis broke the tie again at 17 points with consecutive errors from the Lions to add offensive insurance for the Pride, collecting the win at 25-19.

The final set featured six unanswered points from the Pride with consistent kills by Nangle, Brandon Valdes (Miami, Fla.), and Matzouranis. After the Lions earned a point to close to within one point of the Pride, Regis responded with five consecutive points to advance the lead to six points. The Lions could not hold on for the remainder of the set despite having consecutive kills by Chase Fagen. Robert Burch (Coxsackie, N.Y.) brought about match point with a kill while an attack error by Theo Hackett advanced the Pride to finish the final set, 25-19.

Hackett led the Lions with 10 digs and five kills. Bryson Beck earned eight digs, while Luke Roehm earned five kills with three digs.

The Pride (5-5, 3-0 GNAC) are set to travel to Emmanuel College on Saturday, Feb. 17 with a 12:00 p.m. start, while Emerson College (1-5, 0-3 GNAC) is scheduled to travel to Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 12:00 p.m.
