Men's Volleyball Rebounds for Friday Home Victory

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College picked up its third win of the season, defeating Manhattanville College, 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21), Friday night in a non-conference men's collegiate volleyball match at Higgins Court. 

Joseph Perez (Miami, Fla.) and Andrew Matzouranis (North Andover, Mass.) led the Pride offensively with 14 kills apiece, with Perez also earning eight digs and one block and Matzouranis contributing three service aces and two digs. Grant Wojcik (Bellingham, Mass.) accumulated 41 assists, four digs and five kills. 

Both teams were point for point in the first set with 12 ties, including at 18-18 after after a kill from Perez brought some offensive momentum for the Pride. Manhattanville finished the first set with a kill from Joe Gandarillas and a service ace by Wilton Martinez, 25-23. 

In the second set, Regis put together a 5-0 scoring run to take the lead at 8-3.  Manhattanville answered with a 4-0 run, including two service aces by Gandarillas, to pull ahead, 13-12. Regis would score the final four points of the set, capped by another kill from Matzouranis, to finish 25-21 and tie the match at one set apiece. 

Consecutive kills from Francesco Buanne (Caserta, Italy) put the Pride ahead in the third set, taking advantage of the momentum to extend their lead. Manhattanville responded late in the set with kills from Martinez and Emil Medrano but were unable to hold on as Matzouranis earned the final point from Wojcik to finish the third set in favor of the Pride, 25-18.  

After a kill by Jacob Fletcher tied the fourth set at 12-12, the Pride went on a scoring run starting with a service error from the Valiants. From there Perez earned a kill, followed by a service ace by Matzouranis and an attack error for Manhattanville, to extend the Pride lead. Regis finished the final set with a block by Buanne and Matzouranis.  

Martinez, Medrano, and Gandarillas led the Valiants with nine kills each, with Medrano also collecting ten digs. 

Regis (3-3) is set to host Endicott College on Tues. Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. Manhattanville (1-3) is scheduled to face Rivier University on Sat. Feb. 3, at 11:00 a.m.
