Men’s Volleyball Unable to Hold Off Saints

BOSTON - Regis College could not maintain the momentum from winning the first set as Emmanuel College took the next three sets to earn a 3-1 victory (18-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-20) Tuesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's volleyball match at the Jean Yawkey Center.

Joseph Perez (Miami, Fla.) again led the Pride offensively with 17 kills, plus he contributed to the team's defensive effort with seven digs and four total blocks. Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished with 13 kills, and Tyrell Bucasas (Waialua, Hawaii) earned 35 assists. Defensively, John Nangle (Lowell, Mass.) led the team at the net with five total blocks, and Marcello Cappuccio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) paced the backline with 11 digs.

In the opening set, Regis went on a 7-1 scoring run, led by Plagata with three kills and a block assist, to open a 10-5 advantage. The two teams basically traded points for the rest of the set, with the Pride clinching the first set on a block by Plagata and Francesco Buanne (Caserta, Italy).

Emmanuel (16-12, 9-5 GNAC) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set, led by two kills apiece from Jyles Amirault and Trey Guest. Plagata earned two kills and a block assist to help the Pride close to within three points at 11-8, but the Saints would later score three straight points on kills by Guest, Amirault, and Josh McDonald to extend their lead to 19-13. Emmanuel tied the match by clinching the second set on a kill by Guest.

Guest collected four kills early in the third set as Emmanuel opened an 11-3 advantage, but Regis put together a quick 5-1 scoring run, led by two kills and a block assist from Perez, to close to within four points at 12-8. After a kill by Plagata brought Regis within five points at 16-11, Emmanuel closed out the third set with a 9-1 scoring run, capped by a service ace from Dominic DeFerrari.

In the fourth set, Regis pulled ahead 12-10 on a block by Nangle and Robert Burch (Coxsackie, N.Y.), but the Saints responded with a 7-1 scoring run, led by four kills from Thor Yingling. The teams traded points down the stretch, with Emmanuel clinching the set and the match on a kill by McDonald.

Amirault led the Saints offensively with 19 kills, plus he earned nine digs, while Yingling also collected nine digs along with 15 kills on a .522 hitting percentage. Guest finished with 13 kills, Roman Fabrizio dished out 50 assists in the match, and Nick Sciabica led all players with 15 defensive digs.

Regis College (10-16, 5-9 GNAC) concludes the regular season with a tri-match in New London, N.H., Saturday, April 8, facing host Colby-Sawyer College at 11 a.m. and Dean College at 1 p.m. One victory will clinch a spot in the GNAC Men's Volleyball Tournament for the Pride.
