Men’s Volleyball Loses Home Contest to Lasell

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College could not overcome the offensive output of Lasell University, as the Lasers hit .312 as a team on their way to a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-20, 25-19) over the Pride Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's volleyball match at Higgins Court.

Joseph Perez (Miami, Fla.) led all players with 12 kills, while Tyrell Bucasas (Waialua, Hawaii) finished with 21 assists and a team-high eight digs. Marcello Cappuccio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) contributed six digs, breaking his own school record for most digs in a single season as he reached 239 digs for the year, two more than he accumulated last season.

The two teams split the first 14 points of the match before Lasell rattled off seven unanswered points, including two block assists and one kill from Jan Baranowski. Late in the set, Regis scored consecutive points on a kill by Perez and a block from Bucasas and Francesco Buanne (Caserta, Italy), but the Lasers responded with the final three points of the first set, including a service ace from Riley Grenier.

Lasell (14-12, 8-3 GNAC) put together an 8-1 scoring run early in the second set, starting with consecutive kills by Brenden Joyce and Jordan Shinaut. After four straight points by the Lasers gave them a 15-6 advantage, the Pride went on an 8-3 scoring run, followed by a quick 4-1 stretch led by two kills from John Nangle (Lowell, Mass.) to close to within three points at 21-18. Lasell held off the Pride rally, clinching the second set on a kill by Jasper Schultz.

The Lasers opened a 9-4 advantage in the third set and maintained that margin throughout the rest of the match. After a kill by Perez extended the contest one more point, Lasell closed out the third set and the match on a kill by Theo Zaharewicz.

Eight different Lasell players earned at least one kill, led by Dexter Thomas with seven kills along with six block assists. Jesus Garcia finished with 22 assists and four block assists, Baranowski contributed five kills and six total blocks, and Shinaut added six kills and five digs to the winning effort.

Regis College (9-14, 4-7 GNAC) hosts Emerson and Colby-Sawyer in a tri-match Saturday, April 1, starting with the Pride-Lions contest at 11 a.m. Before Regis' match with Colby-Sawyer, seniors Cappuccio and Donovan Ross (Southbridge, Mass.) will be honored in a Senior Day presentation. Lasell also hosts a GNAC tri-match Saturday, facing Emmanuel and Rivier as three of the top four teams in the league face each other in Newton, Mass.
