Pride Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Dean

FRANKLIN, Mass. - Regis College started a busy week with a strong match in all areas, sweeping Dean College, 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 25-12), Tuesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's collegiate volleyball match at Pieri Gymnasium.

Joseph Perez (Miami, Fla.) led the Pride with 13 kills on 23 attack attempts without an error for a .565 hitting percentage, plus he earned seven digs and four total blocks. Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Francesco Buanne (Caserta, Italy) each finished with six kills and three service aces, while Marcello Cappuccio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) again paced the Pride backline with 10 defensive digs.

Regis scored the first four points of the match and then started to pull away in the opening set thanks to seven unanswered points, led by three kills from Perez. After Dean scored consecutive points on a kill by Aaron Fonseca and a Regis attack error, the Pride closed out the first set with a 10-1 scoring run, featuring consecutive service aces by Buanne.

The Pride jumped out to a 6-1 lead at the start of the second set and then scored six straight points, led by Plagata with two kills and two service aces, to extend their advantage to 15-5. The teams would basically exchange points the rest of the way, with Regis clinching the second set on a kill by Tyrell Bucasas (Waialua, Hawaii).

Perez started the third set with back-to-back kills as well as joining Donovan Ross (Southbridge, Mass.) on a block as Regis eventually established an 8-3 advantage. The Pride continued to increase their lead during the third set, eventually closing out the match on a kill by Alessandro DiPaola (Newington, Conn.) and a solo block from Perez.

Dean (3-14, 0-9 GNAC) was led by Fonseca with four kills and seven digs, while Tyler Martins also earned four kills and Hunter Armitage distributed 13 assists. The Bulldogs finished with as many errors as kills as the Pride earned a .384 team hitting percentage, eight service aces, 42 digs, and six team blocks.

Regis College (9-13, 4-6 GNAC) will host Lasell University Wednesday, March 29, starting at 7 p.m. in a match postponed from Feb. 28 due to poor travel conditions. The Pride will then welcome Emerson and Colby-Sawyer for a tri-match Saturday, April 1, beginning at 11 a.m., with the Senior Day presentation taking place before Regis' match against Colby-Sawyer.
