Pride Men’s Volleyball Falls at Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. – Regis College lost to Nichols College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-17), Wednesday night in a non-conference men's collegiate volleyball match at the Nichols Athletic Center.

Joseph Perez (Miami, Fla.) led the Pride with seven kills as Tyrell Bucasas (Waialua, Hawaii) dished out 18 assists. Defensively, John Nangle (Lowell, Mass.) paced the team at the net with three total blocks, and Marcello Cappuccio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) collected nine digs.

Nichols (9-3) opened the match with consecutive kills from Luis Martinez and then, after a kill by Logan Sras (Lowell, Mass.) tied the set at 3-3, the Bison scored four straight points, including kills by Dylan Knapp, Martinez, and Jake Harasyko. Sras notched another kill to keep the Pride within striking distance, but Nichols closed out the opening set with an 11-2 scoring run, including a block by Harasyko and Tanner Soracco late in the set.

Regis scored the first three points of the second set, capped by a service ace from Bucasas, but Nichols quickly responded with a 5-1 scoring run. The Pride pulled ahead, 13-11, before kills by Knapp, Carlos Mercado, and Martinez put the Bison back on top. Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) earned a kill to tie the set at 20-20, but Nichols scored five of the final six points of the set, capped by kills from Soracco and Mercado.

In the third set, consecutive kills by Knapp helped Nichols grab the early advantage, and the Bison would extend their lead to 17-9 on a service ace by Mercado. Regis scored four straight points, including a block by Robert Burch (Coxsackie, N.Y.) and a service ace from Plagata, but Knapp stopped the Pride run with a kill, and the home team would eventually close out the set and the match.

Martinez and Mercado each finished with nine kills, two service aces, and four digs. Dylan Urbanski notched a double-double with 27 assists and 12 digs, and Soracco led the Bison at the net with six total blocks.
