Men’s Volleyball Takes Two GNAC Contests Saturday

FRANKLIN, Mass. – Regis College got back on the winning track Saturday, defeating Dean College, 3-0, and Colby-Sawyer College, 3-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's volleyball tri-match at Pieri Gymnasium.

REGIS 3, DEAN 0 (25-8, 25-21, 25-12)

Joseph Perez (Miami, Fla.) led the Pride offensively with eight kills, with four other players earning four kills apiece. Tyrell Bucasas (Waialua, Hawaii) finished with 14 assists and two service aces, and Brendan Carroll (Natick, Mass.) paced the team with eight defensive digs to go along with his four kills.

The Pride made just one attack error in the first set for a .636 hitting percentage (15-1-22), led by Josh Nolen (Falls Church, Va.) with a perfect 4-for-4 performance and Matt Ferrara (Sandown, N.H.) with four kills, three service aces, three digs, and a solo block. Three of Ferrara's kills came within the first eight points of the match, all won by the Pride. Regis put together another 8-0 scoring run later in the set, but Dean fought back with consecutive service aces by Nicholas Carlson before a kill by Ferrara closed out the first set.

After Regis scored four of the first five points of the second set, Dean strung together four straight points to take a 5-4 lead. The two teams exchanged points before the Pride took control midway through the set with a 6-2 scoring run. Regis would maintain its advantage the rest of the set, clinching it on a kill by Perez.

Carroll notched two kills and a service ace to give Regis an early 4-1 lead in the third set before Dean came back to pull into a 4-4 tie. The Pride would again take control of the match thanks to an 11-4 scoring run, later followed by five straight points including two kills from Dimitri Stewart (Paterson, N.J.). Regis would finish the set and the match on two kills by Shane Phillip (Brockton, Mass.).

Dean (1-11, 0-4 GNAC) was led by Tyler Martins with 11 digs and eight assists, but the Bulldogs finished with more attack errors (19) than kills (10). For the match, Regis posted a .321 hitting percentage (35-10-78) and collected 12 service aces.

REGIS 3, COLBY-SAWYER 1 (25-17, 25-19, 25-27, 25-7)

Ferrara led the Pride offense with 13 kills, with Kostea Andreenko (Marstons Mills, Mass.) finishing with 11 kills on a .692 hitting percentage. Perez also collected 11 kills along with a match-high five service aces, Bucasas earned 22 assists and four service aces, Brendan Lam (Rockville, Md.) contributed 21 assists and eight digs, and Marcello Cappuccio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) added 15 digs to the winning effort.

The Pride fell behind 6-4 in the first set before going on a 6-1 scoring run, including consecutive service aces by Bucasas. Colby-Sawyer pulled to within one at 15-14, but Regis would close out the opening set with a 10-3 scoring run, including two blocks and a kill from Nolen.

After a kill by Isaac Davies tied the second set at 4-4, Regis scored six of the next seven points to open a five-point advantage. Later in the set, Eric Miller picked up two kills to bring the Chargers back within five points, but an attack error allowed the Pride to clinch the second set.

The third set went back and forth, with neither team able to establish more than a one-point lead until kills by Andreenko and Ferrara pulled the Pride ahead, 22-19. The Chargers were able to extend the match thanks to an 8-3 scoring run to close out the set, capped by a kill and a service ace from Orlando Plagata.

The start of the fourth set was close, but on Perez's serve the Pride scored 14 unanswered points, led by Carroll with three kills and Perez with two kills and two service aces. Regis would advance to match point on kills by Phillip and Andreenko, with the contest ending on a Charger attack error.

Colby-Sawyer (4-11, 1-6 GNAC) was led by Plagata with nine kills and eight digs as well as Miller with eight kills and two block assists. The Chargers could not prevent the Pride from hitting .378 in the match, Regis' second-highest single-match hitting percentage this season.

Regis (8-10, 3-4 GNAC) will face Dean again, this time in Weston Tuesday, March 15, starting at 7 p.m. at Higgins Court.
