Pride Volleyball Sweeps Home Tri-Match

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College put together its best offensive effort of the young season, sweeping both Dean College (25-15, 25-13, 25-9) and Northern Vermont-Johnson (25-13, 25-10, 25-18) Saturday in a non-conference men's collegiate volleyball tri-match at Higgins Court.

Matt Ferrara (Sandown, N.H.) led the Pride with 11 kills while Joseph Perez (Miami, Fla.) finished with 10 kills on a .615 hitting percentage along with eight digs. Kostea Andreenko (Marstons Mills, Mass.) collected six of the team's 14 service aces, and Tyrell Bucasas (Waialua, Hawaii) contributed 14 assists and three service aces.

The two teams exchanged three-point runs to open the match before another 3-0 stretch by the Pride put the home team on top, 7-4. After Dean's Corey Jackson notched a kill to close the Bulldog deficit to two at 13-11, Regis rattled off a 12-4 scoring run to clinch the opening set, featuring three straight service aces by Andreenko and capped by consecutive kills from Josh Nolen (Falls Church, Va.) as well as a kill from Ferrara.

The Pride used an 8-2 scoring run early in the second set, led by three kills from Ferrara, to open an 11-5 advantage. Regis quickly overcame consecutive errors later in the set, scoring the final six points to extend its match lead to 2-0, including a block assist and a kill by Alessandro DiPaola (Newington, Conn.).

Dean (0-3) opened the third set with a block by Jackson and Rodrigo Monteiro, Regis quickly responded with a 10-2 scoring run, starting with three straight service aces by Bucasas. The Pride would finish the set and the match with a 13-3 scoring stretch, punctuated by two kills and two solo blocks from Nolen.

Monteiro led the Bulldogs with four kills, three assists, five digs, and three total blocks, while Jackson also finished with four kills. The Pride finished with a season-high hitting percentage of .383 in the match while they held the Bulldogs to a .040 hitting percentage.

Perez led the Pride offensively with seven kills, hitting .308 in the contest, while Andreenko earned four kills and two block assists and Nolen added three kills and a team-high four total blocks. Bucasas enjoyed another solid match with 17 assists, four service aces, and five digs, one of three Regis players with five digs along with Marcello Cappuccio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Brendan Lam (Rockville, Md.).

In the first set, the Pride initially opened a 6-2 lead and then scored three straight points later in the set, led by Nolen with a kill and a block assist, to extend their lead to 10-4. Regis would close out the opening set with a 7-3 scoring run, led by two kills apiece from Perez and Nolen.

Northern Vermont-Johnson (1-3) took a brief lead early in the second set, but Regis gained control with an 11-1 scoring run. The Pride continued to extend their advantage as the set moved along, completing it with a 9-2 scoring stretch, including two kills and a block assist by Lam.

Kills by Andreenko and Donovan Ross (Southbridge, Mass.) helped the Pride score the first five points of the third set, but the Badgers battled back, closing to within one at 11-10 on a kill by Eli Harden. Regis responded with six unanswered points, including consecutive service aces from Bucasas. After a service ace by Nate Asstafan (Woonsocket, R.I.) brought about match point, the Badgers extended the match with three straight points, including back-to-back blocks, but a kill by Shane Phillip (Brockton, Mass.) clinched the contest for the Pride.

Zachary Anderson led the Badgers with six kills, plus he earned five digs, while Wyatt Moberg led his team with seven defensive digs to go along with three kills. However, NVU Johnson finished with a negative hitting percentage as Regis earned seven team blocks, while the Pride posted a .258 hitting percentage during the match.

NVU Johnson picked up its first victory of the season with a 3-0 victory over Dean (25-22, 25-19, 25-20) in the middle match of the day. Anderson paced the Badgers' attack with 11 kills, while Moberg hit .476 to finish with 10 kills. Monteiro led the Bulldogs with eight kills on a .286 hitting percentage, plus he added eight digs. Tyler Martins tallied nine assists and eight digs.

Regis College (3-3) plays its next four matches on the road, starting Tuesday, Feb. 8, with a GNAC contest against Elms College in Chicopee, Mass., beginning at 7 p.m. Dean and NVU Johnson will face each other again next Saturday, Feb. 12, in a doubleheader hosted by the Bulldogs starting at 12 p.m.
