Men’s Volleyball Loses Season Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Regis College lost to MIT, 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-12), Friday night in the 2020 season opener for both men's collegiate volleyball teams at the Rockwell Cage.

Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.) led the Pride with six kills, while Matt Ferrara (Haverhill, Mass.) finished with four kills and six defensive digs. Brendan Lam (Rockville, Md.) dished out 15 assists to go along with a service ace and two digs, but Regis struggled against a strong MIT offensive attack.

MIT (1-0) scored the first five points of the match and then put together a 9-2 scoring run to open a 15-5 advantage in the first set. The Engineers would close out the set by scoring seven of the final eight points, led by Troy Oliveira with three kills during that stretch.

The Pride stayed with the Engineers early in the second set, pulling ahead 10-9 on a kill by Gueincy Clodomir (Pembroke Park, Fla.). After three errors by MIT allowed Regis to tie the set at 13-13, the Engineers rattled off a 12-2 scoring run, led by Oliveira and Bradley Albright with three kills apiece, to finish off the second set and take a 2-0 match lead.

Nicholas Gustafson earned three kills as MIT scored the first eight points of the third set. The Pride closed to within six at 14-8 on a kill by Ferrara, but the Engineers pulled away thanks to a 9-3 scoring run. After two kills by Alves, MIT clinched the set and the match on a Regis service error and a kill by Gustafson.

Oliveira led the Engineers with 10 kills while making just one attack error in 14 attempts for a .643 hitting percentage. Nathan Wang collected 12 assists and two digs, and Thomas Nelson led the MIT defense with four digs.

Regis (0-1) will have 11 days to prepare for its home opener Tuesday, Jan. 28, against Springfield College, ranked second in the preseason national coaches' poll. The battle of the Pride will begin at 6 p.m. at Higgins Court.
