BISNETT, NET PRESENCE KEY TO REGIS WIN

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College men's volleyball team earned their first victory of the 2016 season with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 26-24) sweep against New England Collegiate Conference opponent Newbury College Thursday evening on Higgins Court. The win improves the Pride's record to 1-7, 1-1 NECC and the setback drops the Nighthawks to 2-8, 0-2 NECC.

Regis had a successful day hitting the volleyball as the squad complied a .398 hitting percentage compared to Newbury's .099. The Pride also owned the front of the net with 15 total blocks while the Nighthawks managed only three.

Sean Bisnett (Oxnard, Calif.) led the Pride attack with a game-best 15 kills and an insane .609 hitting percentage. He also led the team with eight digs and four blocks. Marcos Aguirre (Norwalk, Calif.) had eight kills and a block while Zach Sindoni (Haverhill, Mass.) handed out a match-high 31 helpers.

Xavier Brown-Rose (Wilbraham, Mass.), Skyelar Whitehead (Belchertown, Mass.) and Stephen Watson (Monterey, Calif.) recorded seven kills apiece leading the Nighthawk offensive attack. Watson hit well as he converted .545 of his attack attempts to points. Zach Kaufman (Newton, Mass.) led the Newbury defensive unit with eight digs.

Regis took the first two sets by sizeable margins before the Nighthawks made it interesting in the third set. In the third set, Newbury matched the Pride point for point before a Watson kill gave the visitors a 12-11 advantage midway through the set. Regis kept fighting as they answered the Nighthawks on every possession. An attack error from Marcos Aguirre made it a 17-16 Regis lead before the Pride responded with three straight points while Zach Sindoni served to take a 20-16 lead and forced Newbury to take a timeout.

Newbury scored three consecutive points to come within one, but kills from Brandon Tordoff (Coventry, R.I.), Aguirre and a gang block from Brett Krahl (Santa Clarita, Calif.), Bisnett and Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) which put the hosts up four 23-19. The Nighthawks rallied back to tie the score at 24 before Bisnett ended with contest with two straight kills.

Regis returns to action on Saturday when they travel to NECC opponent Lesley at 1:00 p.m. while Newbury travels to Emerson next Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
