FALCONS CLAW PAST PRIDE, 3-0

WESTON, Mass. – Albertus Magnus College used set scores of 25-12, 25-14, and 25-19 to defeat Regis College on Wednesday night in non-conference men's volleyball action in Weston, Mass. The Pride fall to 1-8 overall on the year, while the Falcons move back to .500 at 8-8 in 2013.

The Pride took an early 2-0 lead in the opening set on errors by the Falcons, and the Pride had the score tied at 6-6 following a Dave Amicangioli (Belmont, Mass.) service ace. The Falcons responded with a quick 4-0 spurt including a pair of kills from Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.) to take a 10-6 lead. The Pride's Claude Jean (Rindge, N.H.) ended the streak with his first kill of the match, but AMC went on an 11-2 run to take a commanding 21-9 lead. Regis would only add three more points in the set, dropping the opening game 25-12.

Angel Aguilar (Silver Springs, Md.) opened set two with a service ace, before the Falcons rattled off five-straight points capped off by a Matt Brancaccio (West Haven, Conn.) kill to make it a 5-1 game. Dan Berdichevsky (Wayland, Mass.) made it an 8-4 deficit with a service ace of his own, but that would be as close as Regis would get as the Falcons built leads in excess of 13 points en route to the 25-14 win.

Albertus Magnus was the team to take an early lead in set three, taking advantage of a pair of Pride errors and a Justin Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) kill to build an early 3-0 lead. Another Berdichevsky ace made it a 7-4 deficit early, and the Pride clawed to within three on Claude Jean's first service ace of the season to make it a 16-13 game. A Falcon service error made it 23-18 late, but kills from Johnson and Chase Brinton (Bethany, Conn.) closed out set three, 25-19.

Berdichevsky and Jean led the Pride with four kills apiece. The Pride had six service aces on the night, led by a pair from Berdichevsky. Joe Coye (Plaistow, N.H.) added three kills, while Angel Aguilar had 12 assists and six digs to lead Regis.

The Falcons were paced by 11 kills from Glenn Johnson, while Justin Tharau added six of his own. Dennis Waibel (Bethlehem, Conn.) handed out a match-high 17 assists, with Carlos Torres (Adjuntas, Puerto Rico) chipping in 10 assists and three service aces. Johnson led the Falcons defense with five digs and Chase Brinton added four as well.

The Crimson and Gold return to action on Friday night with a New England Collegiate Conference matchup versus Newbury College at 5:00 p.m. The Falcons will take on Mount Ida and Wentworth in a GNAC tri-match on Saturday afternoon starting at 10:00 a.m.
