PRIDE READY TO SET FOUNDATION FOR MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Weston, Mass.—Thursday will mark the beginning to a new sport here at Regis College. Men’s volleyball will begin stitching its history into the athletics fabric of Regis College when it competes in its first varsity match at Wentworth Jan. 21 at 7:00 p.m.

The No. 8 ranked Pride, as voted on b y coaches of the New England Volleyball Coaches Association, have the potential for growth and maturity on its roster.

Consisting of eight players, three sophomores and five freshmen, men’s volleyball’s expectations are riding on the excitement of being part of a rich athletics tradition.

“To lay the foundation for this program is an extreme honor,” said head coach Jason Conetta. “When these athletes graduate they will look back to this first game and appreciate what they have built.”

Although Regis dropped its first match 0-3 (30-15, 30-6, 30-11) to Wentworth, the Pride hopes for good things to come.

“We’ll have struggles, we’ll have good times, but it’s all about having fun,” said sophomore and returning player James Guaragna.

With such a young team taken the floor goals have to complement the capabilities of the players.

“If we come out of every game with a thought of something we have improved on as well as something we must practice, then we will have a successful season,” said Conetta.

Guaragna agreed with his coach stating that it would take a team effort, and pushing teammates to be better to reach success.

Conetta understands the obstacles that stand in front of his team, and feels that each obstacle will be overcome.

“Our biggest obstacle is trust,” Conetta remarked. “I am asking these players to trust one another as well as trust this coaching staff.”

It is hard for anyone to develop trust within a few weeks, and that is exactly what this team is attempting to do. Being the first of many, some player’s are looking forward to building that trust and a legacy.

“Being first isn’t bad,” said Guaragna. “Our attitude will set the tone for the future.”
