NEW PRIDE OPEN SEASON WITH HUSKY INVITATIONAL

Weston, Mass.—There is something about stepping to the starting block with runners on either side of you, a straight-away in front of you, and that pop of the starting gun that makes your nerves stand on end. Hours of training come down to seconds of pure exhilaration.

It’s not a feeling shared by many, but it will be a feeling common to the Regis College track and field team Saturday, Dec. 5 at 10 AM when it opens its indoor track and field season at the Husky Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center.

With some leadership to follow, a fairly new team will take to the track for the first time Saturday.

“With a pretty new team most of the athletes have a combination of nervousness and excitement,” said Christine Kloiber, head track and field coach.

“We’re happy with how everyone has developed over the course of the last few months.”

The team has been practicing since October. When asked if it were likely for any records to be broken at the Husky Invite Kloiber said, “We probably won’t see any personal best tomorrow.”

“The more you’re in track and field the tougher it gets to shave slivers of time off your personal best,” she continued.

Luckily for the Pride its seasoned runners have set a high enough standard that its new athletes will have to prove themselves worthy to etch their names in the Regis College track and field record books.

With the completion of its $8.5 million athletic complex earlier this year, Kloiber has had the team focus on progressing on its form the past two weeks.

“This meet is more like a time trial or measuring stick for the rest of the year,” Kloiber stated. “Our philosophy is to focus on gradual progression and successful execution of skills.”

As the team works on progressing its skills to break records, the men’s track and field team progressed from club to varsity status this year.

“The guys we have are progressing well,” Kloiber remarked about her first men’s team. With only four men competing currently smaller objectives are being set. The men’s team has weekly records that they compete to break.

“I’m sure they’ll be trading records back and forth each meet,” said Kloiber.

If interested in watching talented athletes break records, or just you’re your support for the track and field team during the season, most of its meets are held at the Reggie Lewis Center at 1350 Tremont Street in Roxbury, Mass.
