Men’s Tennis Loses Tight Contest

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College held the early advantage, but Bridgewater State pulled out two three-set singles matches to defeat the Pride, 5-4, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men's collegiate tennis match at the Regis Tennis Courts.

After the Bears earned the first point at number three doubles, the Pride took the other two doubles sets, starting with an 8-3 victory for Andrew Bienvenu (Baton Rouge, La.) and Lenny Tam (Waltham, Mass.) at number two doubles. Sebastian Torres (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Mitchell Weiner (Plano, Texas) prevailed at number one doubles, 8-6, to give Regis a 2-1 lead heading into singles.

The teams would split the first four singles points, with Bienvenu winning at number one singles in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) and Torres picking up a straight-set victory at number two singles (6-3, 6-3) to bring the Pride within one point of clinching the match. In the fourth position, Tam won the first set, 6-2, but Sean Nutter of Bridgewater State evened the contest by taking the second set, 6-1, and then Nutter came out ahead in the third set, 7-5, to tie the overall match at 4-4.

At number three singles, Weiner won the first set, 6-1, before Kendan Ziegler pulled even by winning the second set, 6-2. Ziegler would win the final game of the match to clinch the third set, 7-5, and give the Bears the team victory.

Regis College (4-6) hosts Eastern Nazarene in a conference contest next Saturday, April 2, starting at 1 p.m. at the Regis Tennis Courts. Bridgewater State (3-0) hosts Clark University Tuesday, March 29, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
