Pride Tennis Opens Spring Break Trip Against Piedmont

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Regis College tennis teams opened their Spring Break trip with matches against Piedmont University, with the Lions defeating the Pride in both men's action, 6-3, and on the women's side, 9-0, Sunday at the USTA National Tennis Center.

The combination of Andrew Bienvenu (Baton Rouge, La.) and Sebastian Torres (San Juan, Puerto Rico) earned all three points for the Pride men, starting with an 8-2 victory at number one doubles. Piedmont would win two of the three doubles sets to take a 2-1 lead into the singles competition.

Although the Lions clinched the team match with three straight-set victories, the other three singles contests all needed a super-tiebreaker to determine a winner. At number one singles, after losing the first set 6-4, Bienvenu won the second set by the same score and then took the super-tiebreaker to clinch the match, 10-6.

Torres won the first set of his match at number two singles, 6-4, but was forced to play a super-tiebreaker after dropping the second set by the same score. He would prevail 10-7 for the Pride's third team point of the contest.

Mitchell Weiner (Plano, Texas) also won the first set of his match at number three singles, 7-5, but he could not finish in straight sets as he lost a second-set tiebreaker. Weiner's super-tiebreaker was also close, but his opponent eventually pulled out a 10-7 victory.

Piedmont swept the doubles sets in the women's match, losing only three games combined. The Lions would also control the singles matches, with the closest contest coming at number six singles as Harmony Lopez (Carlsbad, N.M.) battled her opponent before losing in straight sets (7-5, 6-4).

Regis College continues its series of matches in Florida as both the men and women face Wartburg Monday, Feb. 28, starting at 6:30 p.m.
