DaRosso, Weiner Earn ITA Scholar-Athlete Honors

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Completing their bachelor's degree requirements in strong fashion, recent Regis College graduates Matt DaRosso (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Mitchell Weiner (Plano, Texas) have earned Scholar-Athlete honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), announced Wednesday, July 14, by the national organization.

To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the 2020-21 academic year and must have been listed on the institutional eligibility form. In total, 772 male student-athletes from 130 different NCAA Division III tennis programs were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.

DaRosso graduated with his bachelor's degree in global business management and recently received his third career Academic All-GNAC award. On the court, he collected 12 career victories combined in singles and doubles, including his final two singles matches of the Florida trip in March 2020, both in a third-set super-tiebreaker. In the 2018-19 season, DaRosso won five straight doubles contests to close out the season on his way to a 6-2 doubles record.

Weiner received his bachelor's degree in sport management, but he will be returning to the Pride tennis team in 2021-22 as he pursues his master's degree. Besides his 10 victories on the court, he has made an impact within the Regis community, serving as a student representative on the Board of Trustees and receiving the Leadership in Athletics Award from the Division of Student Affairs. He concluded the 2018-19 campaign with four straight singles victories.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) is the governing body of college tennis, overseeing men's and women's varsity tennis at all levels – NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, NAIA, and Junior/Community College. According to the ITA's release announcing the academic awards, "Academia is a key aspect of the college tennis experience. Collegiate tennis players add to the rich intellectual community found on college campuses across the nation."

Regis College sponsors 20 intercollegiate sports within NCAA Division III as part of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
