Tennis Teams Open Spring Break Trip Against Division I Foe

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Regis College tennis teams began their Florida swing by taking on Division I school Hampton University, with the Pirates defeating the Pride in both men's and women's action, 7-0, Monday at Sanlando Park.

Playing under Division I rules, the winner of at least two of the three doubles sets would earn one point, with the victorious team being the first to six games. Hampton swept the doubles matches, with the closest competition coming at number one doubles for the men, as Sebastian Torres (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Johnny Pallotta (Bay Shore, N.Y.) battling the Pirates' top team before finally losing, 6-4.

Hampton also won every singles match on both the men's and women's side in straight sets. The toughest battle in singles came in the women's contest at number four singles, as Lauren Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) pushed her opponent to a first-set tiebreaker before the Hampton player prevailed in the tiebreaker, 7-6.

Both tennis teams are scheduled to play two matches Tuesday, March 3, with all of the action taking place at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The women will face Ohio Northern at 11:30 a.m., with the men taking on Saint John's University of Minnesota at the same time. Both teams will hit the court again against King's College of Pennsylvania beginning at 6:30 p.m.
