PRIDE OPEN NECC PLAY WITH SWEEP OF NEWBURY

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College men's tennis team began their 2015 New England Collegiate Conference title defense with a 9-0 sweep of Newbury College on Saturday night at the Natick Racquet Club. The Pride improve to 8-6 on the year and 1-0 in the NECC, while Newbury falls to 0-1.

In doubles play, the No. 3 doubles team of Jarid Polley (North Reading, Mass.) and Austin Nace (Sarasota, Fla.) posted an 8-0 victory over Alex Rodriguez (Hyde Park, Mass.) and Mohammed Al-Noor (Boston, Mass.). Michael Beluch (Lynn, Mass.) and Chris Harrow (North Reading, Mass.) added an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Christian Repunte (Burlington, Mass.) and Joey Verdon (Catskill, N.Y.).

At No. 2 doubles, Antonios Tran (Chelsea, Mass.) and Wayne Gethers (Cambridge, Mass.) jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Nathan Cohen (Randolph, Mass.) and Matt Quattrociocchi (Germantown, Md.), but the Regis duo battled back, eventually pulling off an 8-6 victory to help the Pride sweep doubles play.

The Pride continued their strong play as the action turned to singles matches with Jeremy Morgenbesser (Bayport, N.Y.) and Nick Hildreth (Harvard, Mass.) winning at No.5 and No. 6 singles by matching scores of 6-0, 6-0. Morgenbesser only dropped three points in the match, all via double faults. Quattrociocchi added a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Joey Verdon, while Jarid Polley defeated Gethers, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Mike Beluch posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Antonios Tran at the top singles spot.

The No. 2 singles matchup between Chris Harrow and Christian Repunte needed three sets to be decided as Repunte struck first, taking the opening game, 6-4. Harrow rebounded in the second set, 6-3, before winning the tie-break by a score of 10-6.

Regis returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Becker College for a 3:30 p.m. NECC match. Newbury will host Mitchell College on Tuesday as well.
