RAVENS SOAR PAST PRIDE, 8-1

RINDGE, N.H. – The Regis College men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Franklin Pierce University on Sunday afternoon in Rindge, N.H. The Ravens improved to 1-0 this year while the Pride drops to 1-1. Matthew Smolko (Pelham, N.H.) picked up the lone point for the Pride with a win at number five singles.

The Ravens opened play on Sunday by sweeping through doubles play. Ben Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) and Pat Gilhuly (Killingsworth, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-3 win at first doubles over Mike Beluch (Lynn, Mass.) and Dan Berdichevsky (Wayland, Mass.). Senior Sam Aubin (Manchester, N.H.) and freshman Chris Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) stormed to an 8-2 win over juniors Matt Smolko and Sophorn Nop (Lowell, Mass.) at second doubles. Tyler Colombo (Gardner, Mass.) and Keith Bujak (Lyndeborough, N.H.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Andy White (Bozeman, Mont.) and Jonathon Dost (Taunton, Mass.) at third doubles.

It would be much of the same in singles play, as Franklin Pierce took five of the six matches, including straight-set wins in each of the first four flights. Ben Brewer notched a 6-0, 6-4 win over Beluch, Gilhuly grabbed a 6-2, 6-0 win over Berdichevsky and Chris Brewer defeated Andy White, 6-0, 6-1. Later, at sixth singles, Colombo notched an 8-4 win over Dost in the pro-set format.

Smolko picked up the lone point of the day for Regis with a 9-7 win in the pro-set format at fifth singles.

Regis looks to rebound on Friday afternoon when they travel to Rhode Island College for a non-conference match at 4:00 p.m. The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, September 25th, when they travel to Stonehill for their Northeast-10 Conference opener at 2:00 p.m. in Easton, Mass.
