REGIS GRABS FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON OVER POST

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College men's tennis team got its 2011-12 campaign off on the right foot, grabbing a 5-4 win over Post University on Sunday afternoon in Weston, Mass. The Pride improves to 1-0 this year while Post drops to 0-1. Matthew Smolko (Pelham, N.H.) notched the deciding the point for the Pride with a three set win over Mark Risbridger at number four singles.

The Pride jumped out to an early lead in doubles play, notching two points against the Eagles. Michael Beluch (Lynn, Mass.) and Daniel Berdichevsky (Wayland, Mass.) posted an 8-4 win in number one doubles over Chris Amedjonekou and Dreshawn Lewis while Regis' Andy White (Bozeman, Mont.) and Jonathon Dost (Taunton, Mass.) defeated Markeese Mcleod and Michael McDonald in number three doubles, 8-0. Post's Danny Bonamassa and Mark Risbridger grabbed the lone win for the Eagles in doubles play with an 8-6 win over Sophorn Nop (Lowell, Mass.) and Matthew Smolko.

In singles play, the teams split the final six points, giving Regis the 5-4 victory. Michael Beluch defeated Amedjoneku in number one singles, 6-3, 6-0, while Andy White picked up a 6-1, 6-1, win over Danny Bonamassa in number three singles. Post received singles wins from Dreshawn Lewis, Markeese Mcleod, and Ethan Stemiesz. Lewis posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Daniel Berdichevsky while Mcleod battled past Sophorn Nop, 7-6, 6-1. After falling behind in the first set 6-4, Matthew Smolko rebounded and took set two, 6-4, followed by a 7-5 win in the final set to help Regis capture the win.

The Pride returns to action on Thursday afternoon when the Crimson and Gold host Assumption in a 4:30 p.m. matchup. Post looks for its first win of the fall season when they host West Chester at 3:00 p.m. on September 30th.
