Regis Swim & Dive Incorporates FIU Sprint Invite into Winter Training

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – As part of a week-long winter training session in Florida, the Regis College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the FIU Sprint Invitational, hosted by Florida International University Saturday at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.

GianCarlos Banrey (Roslindale, Mass.) posted the best finish among all Pride swimmers, finishing second in the 50 butterfly. In the tournament-style event, he opened with a second-place finish in 23.81 seconds, followed by a third-place finish in the quarterfinal in 24.14 seconds. He advanced to the final thanks to a semifinal time of 23.62 seconds but lost in the head-to-head final to Lukas Wormald of the University of Waterloo (23.44 to 23.75 seconds).

Sarah Leonard (Brockton, Mass.) also advanced past the first round in one of the tournament-style 50-yard events thanks to a sixth place finish in the 50 backstroke in a season-best time of 28.46 seconds. She was eliminated after the quarterfinal race after posting a time of 29.70 seconds.

In the one-meter diving competition, Elisabeth McQuaid (Marlborough, Mass.) finished in seventh place behind five divers from Division I Florida International as well as Brianna Feldman of Keene State. McQuaid finished her six-dive set with 168.90 points, less than eight points behind Feldman, while teammate Alexa Lancisi (Milford, Mass.) finished in 10th place with 139.25 points.

Joshua Unas (Santa Clarita, Calif.) also scored for the Regis men, finishing in 22nd place for one point in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.86. As a team, the men finished in ninth place with 18 total points, behind top men's team Carnegie Mellon. Meanwhile, the women collected 35 points for a sixth place finish, with host FIU cruising to the team title.

Regis returns to dual meet competition next Saturday, Jan. 12, as both the men and women will face Colby-Sawyer, while the women will also compete against Simmons. The Pride will host the meet at the Regis Aquatics Center beginning at 12 p.m.
