Regis Men’s Swim Team Cruises to Home Victory

WESTON, Mass. – Several members of the Regis College men's swimming and diving team made contributions as the Pride defeated Gordon College, 134-46, Saturday in a collegiate dual meet at the Regis Aquatics Center.

The quartet of Kevin Dugue (Roslindale, Mass.), Joshua Unas (Santa Clarita, Calif.), GianCarlos Banrey (Roslindale, Mass.), and Connor Schwarze (Melrose, Mass.) kicked off the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay in 1:47.07. Dugue would also pick up an individual victory, improving upon his season-best time in the 50 backstroke with a winning mark of 28.08 seconds.

Unas and Banrey submitted the fastest times in three events apiece, starting with Unas's victory in the 50 breaststroke in 29.31 seconds, 5/100ths of a second faster than his previous season-best mark posted last week. Unas also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.49, and he posted the fastest time in the 200 individual medley at 2:12.92.

Banrey earned a new season-best time in the 100 butterfly, finishing first in 53.47 seconds. The freshman followed that with a victory in the 100 freestyle in 50.70 seconds, also a season-best mark, and he had the top time in the 50 butterfly at 24.21 seconds, just 1/10th of a second off the pool record he established in the home opener three weeks ago.

Schwarze contributed two event victories for the Pride, starting with a win in the 50 freestyle in 24.05 seconds. He also battled Dugue in the 100 backstroke, finishing first by 5/100ths of a second with a season-best mark of 1:04.00, just ahead of Dugue's time of 1:04.05.

In a close 1000 freestyle race, Brendan Pike (Weymouth, Mass.) was able to break away late in the event to pick up the victory in 11:10.47, now the top time this season for the team. Grant Kollien (Acton, Mass.) also fought through for a win in the 200 freestyle in 1:56.82, just 22/100ths of a second ahead of Gordon's Aaron Lewis.

Lewis would gain a measure of payback, finishing in first place ahead of Kollien in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:24.68, a little more than three seconds in front of Kollien at 5:27.83, still a season-best time for the sophomore. With victory secured, Regis agreed to switch its swimmers in the final three events to exhibitions.

Regis (2-1) returns to the pool next Saturday, Nov. 10, for a tri-meet at Babson against the host Beavers and defending GNAC champion Norwich starting at 1 p.m.
