REGIS RACES AT DAY ONE OF ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Regis College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in day one of the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships Friday at the United States Naval Academy.

The Pride had a strong showing in the prelim session shattering 3 school records. The men started off the session with their best time of the season in the 200 free relay with Kiet Luong (Malden, Mass.), Nick Rainville (Reading, Mass.), Bryan Johnson (Sudbury, Mass.) and Cassidy Bastianelli (Newton, Mass.) clocking in at a 1:26.90, earning them a spot at finals. Bastianelli broke the school record he set two weeks earlier at the NEISDA championship in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:44.50. The men's 400 medley relay team of Luong, Johnson, Rainville and Bastianelli swam a time of 3:30.38, which also broke a school record set two weeks earlier at the NEISDA championships. Their time also landed them a spot in finals.

During the time trial session following prelims, Kiet Luong also swam in record breaking fashion in the 200 individual medley nabbing a school record with a time of 1:58.48.

For the Pride women, freshman Amanda Graf (Newton, Mass.) made her meet debut in the 200 individual medley clocking in at 2:15.39. Graf and sophomore Jessica Higgins (Peabody, Mass.) will compete in the 100 backstroke on day 2.

Starting off the finals sessions, the Pride men broke another school record, the fourth of the day, in the 200 free relay. Kiet Luong lead the men with a 21.77 in the first leg of the relay, followed by Nicholas Rainville posting a 21.18, Bryan Johnson touched in at 21.57 and Cassidy Bastianelli anchored the relay with a blazing 20.89 for a final time of 1:25.41. Ending the day with the 400 medley relay, the quartet of Luong, Johnson, Rainville and Bastianelli lowered their record from this morning to 3:29.06 with Luong breaking the school record in the 100 backstroke, the first leg of the relay touching in at a 50.84. Bryan Johnson followed with a 1:00.25 in the breaststroke, Nick Rainville clocked in a personal best time on the butterfly leg at 51.17 and Cassidy Bastianelli wrapped up the relay with a quick 46.80 in the freestyle leg.

Regis' men broke five school records by the end of the first day. The Pride return to action tomorrow in day two of the championships.
