Men’s Soccer Earns Road Point in 2-2 GNAC Draw

PAXTON, Mass. - Regis College scored right before the first half ended to pull into a 1-1 tie and then took the lead late in the second half, but Anna Maria College was able to score its own equalizer in the final minutes for a 2-2 draw Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer match at Caparso Field.

Anna Maria (8-3-2, 6-3-2 GNAC) struck first with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half when Rubelsi Moran scored off an assist from Michael John Azzarone. As the clock wound down the final minute of the half, AMCAT goalie Valter Santiago turned away a shot by Michael Cipriano (Thomaston, Conn.), but it created a corner kick opportunity for the Pride. Just before the clock hit zero, Agu Silva-Olivera (Lunenburg, Mass.) scored his third goal of the season with Dane Peterson (San Diego, Calif.) picking up the assist.

With less than 14 minutes remaining in the second half, Anna Maria was called for a foul within the box, creating a penalty kick opportunity for the Pride. Federico Lavini-Ayalla (Weston, Fla.) converted on his third penalty kick of the season without any misses to put Regis on top, 2-1.

The AMCATS put the pressure on the Regis defense late in the match, as both Moran and Baptiste Petitjean hit the crossbar with shots 12 seconds apart in the 84th minute. After a shot by Camron Brito hit the post, Anna Maria earned a corner kick opportunity, which was started by Kyle Brocker. Santiago came in from the other side of the field to join the set piece, received the entry pass from Brocker, and found Petitjean for the game-tying tally.

Chris Alcon (Weston, Fla.) was credited with four saves, three of them coming in the second half, while Santiago finished the match with five saves. Anna Maria outshot Regis, 14-10, with Moran and Nolan McMahon (White River Junction, Vt.) leading their respective teams with four shots apiece.

Regis College (4-7-4, 4-6-2 GNAC) is off until next week when it hosts Saint Joseph's College Wednesday, Oct. 23, starting at 7 p.m.
